Community Pharmacy Program Goes Permanent

Since its launch, the Community Pharmacy Pilot Program has enabled community pharmacists to provide thousands of free consultations for a variety of common health conditions.

On 20 May 2025, the State Government announced that the pilot will transition into a permanent initiative, the Community Pharmacist Program. beginning 1 July 2025. This means patients will continue to access the same treatments and services directly through their local pharmacy.

The program gives Victorians greater choice in how and where they receive essential primary care, particularly benefiting those who face challenges accessing affordable or bulk-billing GPs nearby.

Available services include support for women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), resupply of the contraceptive pill without a prescription, and soon, expanded offerings such as public health vaccinations, travel health consultations, and treatment for mild skin conditions.

Over the next two years, more common health and wellbeing services will be added, expanding the range of care pharmacists can provide.

This initiative is designed to ease cost-of-living pressures and improve access to healthcare for all Victorians. Unlike in other states, these services will remain free of charge in Victoria.
